As recently suggested by the Scamblers in the UK, there is the possibility for a fifth type of sociology that could be added to the public, professional, critical and policy sociologies proposed by Burawoy (see A Case for ‘Action Sociology’).  This fifth type is that of Action Sociology.  According to the Scamblers, and in broad strokes, Action Sociology is oriented to justice and solidarity, it is active and intervenes against distorted communication, and it addresses risky issues through collective action that pushes for social change.  While little has been formally published on this fifth type, I invite you to read the Scamblers’ challenge, that we pursue an Action Sociology.  Their ideas strike at the heart of what many in the MSSA, as well as other professional sociologists, do on a daily basis as they take and create opportunities for applying sociological knowledge and skills to serve people at individual, community, state, national and, in some cases, international levels.  In doing so, they are a part of fostering real change in the world around us.  Given its potential importance and relevance to so many in our region and beyond, it is around this concept of Action Sociology and opportunities for action that we are organizing the 39th Annual MSSA Conference.
