Conference Excitement, New Sociological Spectrum Editors and Open Positions

Greetings MSSA Members and Friends!

With just two weeks to go until the start of our 38th annual conference, we’re all getting rather excited!  Given the gathering of colleagues, the paper presentations, the special speakers and, of course, the lure of Mobile, Alabama, our time there is definitely something to look forward to.  As you may have seen via the MSSA listserve, the deadline for reserving a room at the hotel has been extended to November 1.   You may call the hotel directly at (251) 438-4000 or via their toll free number 1-800-922-3298. You will need to reference the event name (Mid-South Sociological Association) to receive the conference rate.

New Editors

The excitement this fall has been further increased by the appointment of new editors for our journal, Sociological Spectrum.  With John Lynxwiler’s impressive and much appreciated tenure as Editor of Sociological Spectrum having come to an end, he and a committee of MSSA members worked together to identify a new editor.  I am pleased to announce that the result of their considerable efforts is the appointment of co-editors: Dr. Kevin D. Breault and Dr. Brian Philip Hinote from Middle Tennessee State University.  All submissions to Sociological Spectrum, or inquiries about editing special issues, should be directed to them at the following address:

Sociological Spectrum
Department of Sociology & Anthropology
Middle Tennessee State University
MTSU PO Box 10
Murfreesboro, TN 37132

Welcome to Drs. Breault and Hinote, and special thanks to the Search Committee for helping pull together and sort through what I understand were a good group of very impressive applications.

Open MSSA Positions

MSSA Webmaster and Forum Editor

Since I will soon be taking on the duties of President-Elect after the conference in Mobile, I can no longer serve as webmaster and MSSA Forum editor.  The two positions have effectively become one and the MSSA Forum Editor is a voting position on the Executive Committee.  While there may be people who would like to have two votes on committees, I am not one of them.  So, I am putting out this call to ask people to contact me or another member of the Executive Committee if they are interested (or if they know someone who would be interested) in serving in this position.  With the combining of Webmaster and MSSA Forum Editor into one position, and the help of our website guru Heather Hopkins at Augusta State, the duties of this job have been nicely streamlined.  Such duties include updating information on the website (no coding or special programs needed) and sending out periodic notices (via the website’s “post” function) with calls for participation and important announcements.  If you have any questions about this position, please feel free to contact me at

Elected Positions

As happens every year, a new group of people take office and we begin to think about who to elect to other positions.  This year we will need to identify people to run for the following offices:

  • President
  • Vice-President
  • Nomination Committee Chair
  • Committee on Minorities
  • Membership Committee

As always, I hope everyone is well, and I look forward to seeing all of you – or at least as many of you as possible – two weeks from now in Mobile.
