2013 MSSA Conference Call for Organizers

Hey Everyone – it’s time to start thinking about what conversations, discussions and debates we’ll have at next year’s conference!!  At this point we’re putting out a general call for people to propose conference sessions of all types.  We hope you’ll all consider putting a session together and sending your proposal to the Program Chair.

39th Annual MSSA Conference

Call for Session/Workshop Organizers

Action Sociology: Opportunities in a (Post) Modern World

October 23-26, 2013

Atlanta, GA   –   Holiday Inn: Atlanta Capitol Conference Center

Program Chair:  Dr. Timothy B. Gongaware   University of Wisconsin – La Crosse

The Mid-South Sociological Association invites proposals for sessions and workshops to be held at the 39th Annual MSSA Conference in Atlanta, GA.  In addition to the important standard sessions, we encourage the development of thematic sessions that address the action of sociology, and, in particular, the studies of those who may already be engaged in action sociology.  More information about the theme can be found on the MSSA website (2013 Annual Conference), but such sessions could potentially include:
  • Identifying areas in our social world where action sociology takes place.
  • Explaining how action sociology is or may be engaged.
  • Exploring opportunities for action sociology to be created.
  • Examining experiences of those who take advantage of action opportunities on a local, regional, national or  international stage.
  • Theorizing the place of action sociology in relation to traditional and/or modern sociological engagement.
  • Studying the benefits and repercussions of engaging in action sociology.
Whether the session topics directly relate to action sociology, or to any one of the many forms of sociological practice, explorations of all opportunities and conditions in our (post)modern world are welcome.
In addition, we are seeking individuals who would be willing to help organize short workshops on professional development topics.  Such workshops may include a single speaker, a panel or experts and/or other activities.  Topics may include, but not limited to: Grant Writing, Balancing Work/Life, Balancing Research/Teaching/Service, Chairing Small/Large Departments, Graduate Student Mentoring, The Post-Doc Experience, Surviving Graduate School, Finishing the Thesis/Dissertation, Applying to Graduate Schools.
Please send all session and workshop proposals directly to Program Chair, Dr. Timothy Gongaware, at tgongaware@uwlax.edu.  Proposals must include your name, affiliation, contact information, a tentative session title, and a very brief description of what the session will attempt to include.
